My last weeks abroad!!

on Saturday, January 1, 2011

Happy New Year everyone! This post is like 6 months late but I figured that if I don't post this now, I may never get around to it. This is also a very productive beginning to the new year! This entry is not really written as well as the other ones and is more of a rough outline of what Francisco and I did the last month in Italy. By now all of the pics have been posted to facebook so I won't upload those to here. I wrote this on my iPod on the plane ride back to the US and it may not be fully in complete sentences or anything like that.

It is hard to believe that one year ago I was at home in Minnesota preparing for my journey to Milan! Little did I know that I would have the time of my life......

Francisco and I went to Portofino with Sabrina and Pascalle the morning after the champions league final. Portofino is considered to be one of the most beautiful ports in the world and it definitely did not disappoint. We had a great day seeing the beautiful landscapes and the yachts that were docked there.  The next day Francisco and I went to Paris to see the French Open and to visit the beautiful city. We stayed with my mom's friend (Adriana) again and we had an incredible time in the city. The French Open was a lot of fun and the highlight was probably seeing Maria Sharapova. We were very eager to see the tennis matches and we were actually the first people to get in that day. We saw the 3rd round and the tickets for the grounds were only like 20euros each! Once we got back to Milan I studied innovation for a few days and went to Yguana (my favorite aperitivo) with Francisco and Marine and Margaux. On that Thursday I had my innovation final and I studied the wrong things but I thought it was a great test. Update: I got my grade an got an A so it turned out for the best.

The next day which was Saturday we went to Lake Como. Como was beautiful we started at Varenna and then paid 11 € for a day ferry pass and went to bellagio which was beautiful. After we walked around we took a ferry to Lenno we walked to Villa Babianello which is in a bunch movies and we ate nutella. We spent the day outside but unfortunately we forgot our hats (which we bought at the French Open). After, we took the ferry back to Bellagio and then Varenna but we ended up waiting forever for the train to Milano because the weekend schedule didn't include all the normal trains. It was funny because in the morning in milano we saw an American family and we ended up seeing them on the train back too.

The next day, Megan came from Africa and it was great seeing her. With Megan we ate lunch at the boat in navigli with Margaux (Marine's friend from France) and then for dinner we ate at a pizzeria in ticinese. I ended getting food poisoning from the foccacia at lunch but besides that it was a great day. We also watched the French open final at Toine's apartment.

The next day we headed to duomo and went shopping with margaux and Megan. I ended up buying some rayban aviators so it was a success. We also went to luini's for a snack and then burger king for lunch since margaux wanted to go. Then we napped around and made dinner and then went out to the columns and then the yellow bar near mcdonalds at PTA ticinese and then navigli where we randomly met up with a group of Canadians I know from school.

The next morning we got up bright and early to go to Venice for the day. Although I initially just wanted to sleep in I had an incredible day and enjoyed the city much more than my first trip there. It was much less crowded and the weather was perfect as well. We also did a bit of shopping and we all really enjoyed it.

The next day I went to school and studied for a few hours and Fran and Megan went to duomo area and tried to get his inter jersey fixed. Unfortunately the concept of customer service after the sale is made is non existent so they didn't help him. When I got home I was surprised when Megan had bought me the D&G cologne I wanted as a kind gesture for housing her during her visit. That evening was rachels last night in Milan so we went to a dinner for her at pizzeria ticinese (again). Afterward we went to the collumns for a drink and then headed to old fashion for a night of dancing.

The next morning we got up early and went to Cinque Terre with Johan and Oscar. The train was like 4 hours long and then we dropped off our things at our hotel in the 3rd or middle village called Corniglia. After that, we hiked north to the next village and had lunch. I had a delicious lasagna and we met an American family. During the walk between villages we ran into Jorgen (a friend from Norway). After, we headed to the next village or the first one of the 5 and stopped on the way and had a lemonade from a farmer making it from his farm. At the third village we had a gelato and bought wine and then took the train back to corniglia where we had a wonderful dinner at a nice restaurant overlooking the Mediterranean sea. I had the best risotto of my life that night and when we got back home we played cards and Francisco displayed true dominance. In fact, we were the only 2 that won any games that night so we did well for ourselves. The next day we hiked the last two villages and spent the rest of the day at the beach where Francisco and I recieved our first and second sunburns of our lives respectively. After that we watched the first game of the world cup over dinner and we met a family from salt lake. When we got home that night we were exhausted and went straight to bed. Cinque Terre was easily one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen and I hope to go back again one day.

The next day, we then got up early and went to Verona for the day where we saw Juliet's house and stuff. It was just an hour away via train so it was a perfect day trip. After we got home we watched the world cup at carlsberg (the pub/resturants where I watched a few of the Champion's League games). We saw the US tie against England and we met some Americans who work in Italy from Michigan.

The next day we went to taxi blues to watch Ghana play and hung out.

On Monday I probably tried to study.

Tuesday I had my exam and Francisco broke his foot and instead of taking a trip to Switzerland we went to an opera at la scala and Oscar and Johan and Johanna all came over afterward and we hung out on my balcony and we saw a shooting star.

The next day we walked around Milan with Megan for her last full day and had the best gelato ever ( at chocolat) and then we went to roialto for an aperitivo. After, we came home and she packed. Megan was with us for like two weeks and we had an amazing time with her. I was really glad that she was able to come because ever since I went to college I didn't really ever have the chance to hang out with her.

The next morning we dropped her off at the bus for the airport and then we came back and took a nap. Then we got up and booked our trip for Rome and then went shopping and had chocolat gelato again and then I bought new work shoes at Tod's. After we went to the boat at navigli for a going away dinner and said bye to Oscar, Johan, Ole Martin, Oyvind, Heidi, Emelie, Latetita and Daniel. After we also had Riva Reno gelato. While Megan was here Francisco and her went out for gelato at least twice a day and I would join them when not studying so I can truly say that I have a new appreciation for the delicious desert.

Francisco and I spent 3 days in Rome and loved every minute of it. we stayed overnight with the Brandos because we missed the train and it was truly special to be able to spend time with them. The Brandos were our neighbors in Colombia when we were little so they knew our parents very well. In Rome we at at the gelato place the obamas went to and took a bus tour of the city. when we first got to our hostel they took us to another one in what turned out to be little india and it was in a terrible neighborhood and we should have complained because what they did was probably illegal. Overall, it was incredible to be able to spend time in the eternal city with my clone!!!!

After rome we came back to milan where i studied for my last exam and then we packed everything up and left. it was sad to leave and i already miss all of my friends and the city. the past 5 months were truly an adventure of a lifetime and the countless memories will be with me forever.

thank you for staying with me during my journey. i hope that you enjoyed hearing about the things i did. i know that these blog posts will be very rewarding to read in a few years.

god bless all of you.

Love,
Camilo

Barcelona, Francisco, Champion's League, Portofino, and Paris!

The past couple of weeks have gone by in a flash! I have been really busy traveling and enjoying my time with Francisco but this Friday I have my first final exam so this post is more of a short summary of what I have been up to than the normal detailed posts I write.

Two weekends ago I went to Barcelona with Johan and we had a great time. Unfortunately I absentmindedly left my passport at home so I had to come back and pay for another flight for the next morning. I arrived to Barcelona a day later than planned but I met up with Johan at the hostel and we had a great time. The highlights included meeting 2 nice girls from Canada, 2 nice girls from Georgia, going to the beach, going clubbing until the wee hours of the morning, celebrating Barcelona's league championship with the rest of the city, and walking around the beautiful city. La Sagrada Familia was a really beautiful site and overall I had a great time. Our flight home was cancelled so we stayed in a hotel an extra night but then came back early the next morning. I really liked the city but I think I would rather work and live in Madrid and then vacation in Barcelona.

When we got back to Milan I was really excited because my brother would be arriving in a couple days. On the special day I got up early to meet him at the airport and it was awesome to see him again. Later that day I took him to the Duomo and the other historic places around the city and we had a lot of fun. That next Saturday we both put on our Inter jerseys and went to Piazza Duomo to cheer on Inter in the Champions League Final with tens of thousands of other people. It was easily the largest crowd I have ever been in (even larger than the Obama speech in Philadelphia before elections). Inter ended up winning and the city went crazy and it was really cool to be able to experience such a crazy event with Francisco. The following morning we headed to the Italian Riviera to relax from the previous day's madness. We headed to a small town called Santa Margharita Ligure and then Portofino, which is considered by many to be the most beautiful port on the Mediterranean. It was one of the most beautiful places I have seen and every way we turned looked like a postcard. We had a great day and we got some well deserved rest.

The rest of the week I finished my last classes and we also went out to Old Fashion one night so Francisco could get a feel for the night life in Milano. He also spent a bit of time watching Entourage because I told him how much he enjoyed it.

On Thursday, Francisco and I headed to Paris to spend a day at the French Open at Roland Garros. Our first day we went to the tennis tournament and saw some great players and matches. The most notable players we saw were Robin Soderling (last year's finalist) and Maria Sharapova (the blond bombshell). In total we saw roughly 10 hours of tennis and we were exhausted at the end of the day from being in the sun for so long. Like my previous trip to Paris, we were very fortunate because we stayed at my mom's friends house and we had a lot of fun with them. Our 2nd day in Paris we went on a bike tour and we had a lot of fun. The weather the previous day was perfect but it got colder and cloudier during the bike tour and it even rained a little bit. I think I always bring the bad weather to Paris. After the bike tour through the historic center of the city Francisco and I went to an area in the SE part of the city near 'Bercy' and saw the movie Robin Hood or Robin des Bois as they like to call it and then had dinner at a micro brewery. It was a really fun evening and we both loved the small village feel to the area with the movie theater and all the restaurants. If Milano or Philly had an area like that, I would probably be there every weekend! That night Adriana had friends over and we had fun talking to them. The husband was French but his wife was Colombian so it was interesting to talk to her. She said that the thing she missed the most from Colombia was Dunkin Donuts so we had a good laugh about that (Our dad's side of the family owns all of the Dunkin Donuts in Colombia).

On our 3rd and last full day in Paris we went to Montmartre, Notre Dame, saw the Moulin Rouge, Arc de Triomphe, Eiffel Tower, Champs Elysees, and the Statue of Liberty. We also met up with one of Francisco's close friends from college, Lynn Huynh, for lunch at a Colombian restaurant and we had a lot of fun. Francisco had a bandejita paisa and I had a tamale but the one my aunt makes is actually better! That night when we got back to Adriana's apartment we had dinner and then watched the movie Frantic, a 1988 thriller with Harrison Ford, because it was set in Paris and we wanted to see a movie with Paris in it. It turned out to be the PERFECT movie for the occasion because it was entertaining and in the movie the retraced the SAME exact steps we had done that same day. It was a lot of fun.

The next morning we got up early to pack up and head to the airport. When we got to the airport, Francisco and I stood in line at the gate for like 2 hours to make sure we were the first people on the plane so we could sit next to each other and get good seats. Fortunately our plan worked and we were able to watch Entourage the entire way home on his iPhone. Later that evening (last night) we finished watching the last season of Entourage and now I need to start studying for my finals!

I hope you have all been well! We miss you guys!

Entourage, Night Life and La Scala

on Wednesday, May 12, 2010

The weather in Milan has been pretty terrible the past week, but it has not slowed me down. Last Thursday I went to a club called Le Banque for its closing night since the owners open up an outdoor location for the summer season. Oscar had a friend from Sweden visiting so a group of us went together. On Friday, Tomas and Keli (both from Iceland) had a group of us over for dinner and it was awesome. Tomas turned out to be a pro in the kitchen and made some wonderful steaks with a mushroom sauce. After the great dinner Jaap and I went to Oscar's apartment for a short celebration for his roommates (Giulia) birthday. To celebrate they wanted to play beer pong, the american college party game. As I was the only American there, they made me play the first game in the hopes that they would be able to say that they beat an American. Unfortunately for them, they didn't have beginners luck and Jaap and I came out on top. Afterward, we headed to Karma for the opening night. I was looking forward to Karma, because a friend who was here last semester from Wharton had told me that it was his favorite club to go to. I ended up having a great time and definitely want to go back again. The place was HUGE and had a ton of open outdoor areas so it will be even better when the weather gets nicer.

I had also been looking forward to Friday for a very long time because it was when I would be hearing which group at JPMorgan I would be working at. While I was at Karma I texted Francisco and asked him to check my email for me to see if they had sent it yet. I was ecstatic when he replied telling me that I would be joining the Consumer & Retail group!! I really wanted to work in the group and I am a strong believer that everything happens for a reason so I was very excited. After we left Karma we got a piadina hamburger from a food cart around the corner and it was really good. A piadina is like a big tortilla so it was basically like a hamburger with lettuce and tomato except in a wrap.

I am really excited to be going back to NYC this summer. Francisco and Kayla might be coming to visit at the beginning of the summer as soon as we get back from Italy and it would be a lot of fun. Last summer I was overwhelmed with work and living there and everything but I am really excited to be going back. You can see the JPMorgan building in the picture below... it is to the left of the MetLife building with the top that looks like a crown.

On Saturday Marine wanted to take me to a place called Luini's for panzerotti.  A panzerotto is a pastry that is like the combination of a calzone, an empanada, and a donut. Filled with mozzarella and prosciutto or other fillings it was absolutely amazing and I will be returning again and again. As soon as I had it I was excited to go with my brother who arrives in 1 week. Since we like most of the same foods I know that he will love them. Later that evening I went to Bar Milano which is an aperitivo with a group of friends and I had a great time. Emelie, a friend from Sweden, had 2 friends visiting her so it was fun talking to them. I am always amazed at how well all of the Swedes I have met speak English. They are all literally at least bilingual and it's great- I wish the US was like that with Spanish! After we left Bar Milano we all went to a bar called Cream and had a drink. The bartenders there were crazy and filled the glasses up 98% of the way with alcohol before adding any other juices/colas/mixers so if someone is in Milan and wants a bar with good value I know just the place. I was planning on going home after Cream since I had been out the previous 2 nights and thought it'd be good to go to bed before 5am. My friends talked me into going to Just Cavalli with me though and I couldn't say no after they offered to pay for me to get in. On the way home we all stopped for another piadina hamburger... yes, it is THAT good.

I spent most of the day Sunday watching Entourage but I took a break to study for and take the test for JPMorgan. I knew most of the material but had a couple typos so I didn't do as well as I could have. I did pass though so that's good. From Thursday to Sunday I watched seasons 2-4 of Entourage and I still can't make myself stop watching. I downloaded a program called uTorrent just to download the shows and I absolutely love it. You may remember that I watched the first season in January at the airport on the way to Milan. I would have to say that it is definitely my favorite TV show. So far this week I have watched the 5th season and am working on the 6th season. The 7th season will start being aired on HBO this summer and I am really excited to watch it.

On Monday I didn't have any classes since my Innovation class ended and my only other class that day was cancelled. It was great to be able to relax and hang out without having to go to a lecture. Not surprisingly I spent most of the day glued to the computer screen watching Entourage.

I also had a great week because yesterday I went to watch an opera at La Scala and it was free. It was a rehearsal for a German Opera and it was awesome to see it in the most famous opera house in the world. My favorite part was the music played by the orchestra and I would love to go to a concert or ballet with my brother while he is here. I was disappointed earlier in the day because I had class while the tickets were distributed and I did not think I was going to be able to go so I came home to watch Entourage. During class there was a huge thunderstorm and my phone must have stopped working because while I was home I realized it didn't have any signal. As soon as I restarted it I received a text that Oscar had sent earlier in the day saying that he had gotten me a ticket if I could get there by 7pm. When I saw the text it was already 6:30pm so I went outside and ran toward the opera house until I got to the nearest taxi stand. I am glad I restarted my phone because I almost missed the amazing opportunity! After the show we went to McDonald's for a cheap dinner and then to Oscar's for a small get-together.

Two days ago Johan and I booked a trip to Barcelona so I am also REALLY REALLY REALLY excited for that. It is definitely a city I didn't want to leave Europe without visiting so it was a great feeling to book the flights. As long as the volcano in Iceland doesn't disrupt the trip it should be a great time! I have spoken to Juan, my mom, and Francisco quite a bit this week and it has been great. Family really is one of the few things in life that you can ALWAYS count on. Love you guys! One of Juan's friends is going through a rough patch so I hope that everything goes well for him.

I haven't been taking that many pictures lately but I hope to start up again in Barcelona so that my posts are more appealing to the eyes! I was also just taking a look through the old picture I have on my computer from my old phones and I almost forgot about the Philadelphia Eagles game that Sim and I went to last year! Those are some great memories!

Spending Time in Milano (Post #25!)

on Thursday, May 6, 2010

Ciao! As the title suggests, I have been in Milan over the last few weeks. I realize that I have not really been caught up with my blogging so today I hope to take care of that. Unfortunately I have had a cold for like the past 2 weeks (I am finally getting better) so that is part of the reason why I have been staying in town.

Here is recap of the past couple of weeks...

Two Wednesdays ago I went to Old Fashion with some friends and had a good time. This was my second time at OF with the outside area open and it was very nice. Unfortunately they started playing old hits from like the 60's and 70's toward the end of the night which I didn't really enjoy but everyone else there was loving it so that's good I guess. The next night I went to Le Banque (a club which is located near the Duomo in the building of an old bank) after my roommates birthday party at Arcobaleno (the dorms of Bocconi) but I left early because that was when I received the news about my grandfather's passing. The next few days I spent at home studying and talking to my family. I also ran out of groceries that week so I ended up eating out a lot at aperitivos for meals. The rest of the weekend was pretty uneventful for me besides my trip to the Duomo for mass which I wrote a blog entry about.

The next week I was really looking forward to Wednesday, because that is when Inter was playing Barcelona for the 2nd leg of the Champions League Semifinal. I met up with Johan, Oyvind, and Gustaf and we all watched the game at a restaurant in Navigli (the area of Milan near the canals with all the aperitivos). Inter received a red card very early in the game so they had to play mostly defense the whole game and it was super intense the whole time. Everyone in the restaurant was on the edge of their seats the whole time and I have never been so nervous for a game I was not actually playing in. In the end, Inter beat Barcelona 3-2 in aggregate and advanced to the Champions League Final for the first time in nearly 40 years. Francisco will be here for the Champions League Final so we are going to go to Piazza Duomo to watch it on the big screen with the rest of the city. In case you missed the game, here is the celebration at the end!

During the game Gustaf told us about how he had been to the Ferrari museum in Maranello and test drove a Ferrari for 15 minutes for 60Euros. Needless to say, I am going to look into taking a trip down there to see if I can test drive one as well. It might not be possible since I don't have an EU driver's license but that would be incredible!

The next few days of last week I just spend studying and trying to feel better but on Thursday I went to the Alfa Romeo museum with a few friends. Bart, a friend from Holland, has his car here so picked me up after class with the rest of the gang (Jaap, Daniel, and Krishan) and we all headed to the outskirts of Milan to visit the storied car maker. I never realized that Alfa Romeo had started in Milan so it was cool to learn about its history and also see some really really old cars. Overall it was a lot of fun to go to the museum but to also spend time with some friends. On the way home we stopped at Burger King and it was great. Friday morning I met up with Johan, his roommates and a crew of Norwegians to celebrate Valborg, a Swedish holiday. They didn't really seem to know why Valborg started but it's basically a huge party where everyone sprays champagne on each other (think a formula one victory celebration). We also ate strawberries and chocolate which is also a tradition. It was a lot of fun but afterward I decided that I wanted to get my hair cut because it makes me feel even hotter when I am outside. When I got to the hair salon the guy asked me why my hair was full of champagne (or spumante in Italian) and it was a really entertaining exchange. My haircut only cost 8Euros and now I look like I am ready to go to work!

Here is my last picture before my haircut!

Friday night I went out to a club called Alcatraz with Laetitia, Daniel and Carlos (a friend from Brazil) and we had a good time, but it was SOOOO far away. I probably won't go back just because it was so far away. Afterward we had a hard time finding a cab so I didn't get home until way past my bed time. Saturday evening I went to Oyvind's place for a pre-party and I ended up being the first person there so we watched some scenes from a tv show he really likes and it was really funny. After everyone else got there we all had a good time talking and hanging out and then we all went to Just Cavalli for a night of dancing. I decided to head home relatively early because I had to do homework the next day but I still had a lot of fun. After I left it took me like 30 minutes to get a cab but I was finally able to jump in a cab before a group of other guys and as we drove away they all chased the cab which was interesting.

The next day I found out Krishan's dad had passed away a couple days earlier in an automobile accident. Krishan is a friend from Germany and was with us at the Alfa Romeo accident. Another one of my friend's grandfather also passed away this week so it has been kind of crazy with so many tragic things happening. On Monday my group for my Innovation Management class had to present for 8 minutes on the format war between Blu-ray and HD DVD so I spend all day Sunday working on it. The two girls I was working with both wanted me to present alone and I didn't really like the presentation we had all put together earlier in the week so I revamped the entire thing and then spent hours going over it to make sure I really liked it. The next day I rehearsed it many times because we were scheduled to be the last group to present (7pm!). All of the hard work ended up really paying off because several people told me it was a great presentation and even while I was presenting I could feel everyones' eyes on me. In contrast, when other groups presented it seemed like half the class was not paying attention and people in the audience were talking to each other. As I was leaving class the professor stopped me to congratulate me so it was a great way to end the day. That was  my last lecture of that class so now my Mondays are pretty open and now I basically just have 3 lectures. I will still have a final for that class in June tho so I need to start studying for it soon. After I left class I met up with some friends at Cheese, an aperitivo next door to Iguana, for Rachel's birthday. You might remember Rachel as my really nice friend who I went to church with at the Duomo. Relaxing after my presentation and having dinner with friends was a great way to end the night!

Tuesday I finally was able to go grocery shopping and it feels great to finally have some food here! I went to a grocery store called Esselunga because it was raining a lot and I figured I would have to be outside less if I took the tram to get there rather than walking to Sma, the one I normally go to. The only different things I got was beef (I normally don't cook meat here) and macaroni and cheese (no one in Italy eats it). For dinner I made the 4 pieces of meat for dinner and they were delicious. I was able to eat all 4 pieces because they were pretty small. Yesterday the inner Mexican in me really wanted fajitas for dinner so I invited a few friends to a Mexican restaurant (Ristorante Messicano in Italian) called Papas and Beer. As the name suggests, it was a Mex-Tex restaurant but Jaap, Johan, Daniel, and I really enjoyed the fajitas. It was not until after I decided to eat Mexican for dinner that I realized that it was Cinco de Mayo so that was pretty cool. After dinner, Jaap and I met up with some friends at a bar to watch the final of the Coppa Italia between Inter and Roma. The game was really intense and we all knew there was going to be a red card at some point because the game was extremely chippy. In the closing minutes Francesco Totti took the honors of getting the red card when he kicked another player intentionally in what was one of the dirtiest plays I have ever seen. He followed up by touching the player in the head with his toes and for a second I thought he was going to kick his head. In the end Inter won and earned their first title of the season but they have a chance to win a total of 3 which would be really impressive. They can still win the Scudetto by winning the Serie A and then of course the Champions League if they beat Bayern Monaco (as they call them here in Italy). After the game we went to our Icelandic friends house for a few beers and to watch some youtube videos which were really funny. I showed them the grape lady video which is a personal favorite and they really liked it.

Here is the goal from the game last night by Milito! Inter won 1-0 and this was a great shot!

Today I got done with classes and now I am just in my room relaxing and trying to get caught up with studying for my JPMorgan training exam. Oscar and some other friends have guests from out of town visiting so these next few days I will probably be going out with them to celebrate. Tomorrow I am going back to the Icelandic guys' place for dinner and then we are going out to a club called Karma if the weather isn't too rainy. IT has been raining for the past week or so and there are no signs of it letting up. Francisco will be here in 13 days and I couldn't be more excited for him to arrive. We are going to have a great time together.

Champions League Semifinal: Inter vs Barcelona (4/20/2010)

on Saturday, May 1, 2010

In February Inter and Milan played against Chelsea and Manchester United and I really wanted to go to those games but was unable to get tickets. After Inter ended up beating Chelsea and CSKA Moscow to advance to the semifinals against Barcelona, I immediately decided that this was a game I was NOT going to be missing. Barcelona is considered by many to be the world's best team right now, and they also have the best player in the world in Lionel Messi. You might remember from my post about my trip to Madrid that I saw him score all 4 goals against Arsenal in the quarterfinals. To be able to watch Messi play in person at a point in his career like this, would surely be a one in a lifetime opportunity.

The tickets went on sale to the general public on Monday morning at 8:30am the week before the match. To ensure that I would be able to get tickets I woke up at 6am and arrived at the bank in Porta Ticinese at 6:45am. For whatever reason, the only place to buy tickets are the banks (in this case it was the Banca Popolare di Milano). You can also buy tickets online so I brought Oscar's passport with me to buy him a ticket and he sat at home to try to get the tickets online. With both of us trying to buy tickets we thought there would be no way we would not be able to get them. I initially wanted to get to the bank really early at like 3 or 4am but I called an Italian friend of mine (Alessandro Maurelli who studied abroad at Wharton last semester but goes to Bocconi full time) who said that there would absolutely be no one there until like 7am. When I got to the bank I was relieved to be the 4th person in line but was frustrated with the fact that the first 3 people in line would randomly walk away for like 15 minutes at a time to eat breakfast and then come back to the front of the line. Apparently once you get there and someone sees where you are in line then you have the right to come back to the same spot. I am more used to the lines in the US for black Friday where if you get out of line and no one that you know is there to save your spot then you lose it. In reality, I should have gotten there at 4am and once the 2nd person got there I could've come back home and slept for a few hours. In true Italian fashion, 2 seconds before the bank opened the 2nd guy in line let a couple of his friends come in front of him in line. It proved to not matter though, because the first guy in line who was like 65 years old has brought like 10 photocopies of his friends passports and wanted to buy 20 tickets. He had managed to buy 5 by the time everyone in the crowd started protesting and they made him leave. By this time he had wasted like 25 minutes because the man at the bank selling the tickets seemed a little incompetent and it took him forever to sell each one. Since so much time was wasted all of the tickets were sold out and no one else was able to get tickets. At this point, I was getting ready to shed a tear or two because I was so disappointed because I wanted to go to the game so badly.

A dutch friend of mine (was on the Tuscany road trip), Toine (pronounced twon), who was at another bank and was also unable to get tickets called me and asked me if I wanted to go get a coffee and brioche since we had woken up so early. I agreed and when we got there we probably looked the 2 of the most miserable people in the city. Maybe miserable isn't the right word, but I know I was really disappointed that I wasn't going to be able watch such a historic game at San Siro. This all changed when I received the phone call which was heard around the world (that's what I like to call it anyway). Oscar called to tell me that Oyvind (another friend here) was able to buy tickets online so I literally ran out of the place and sprinted all the way home. Everyone in the city must have been trying to access the site because it was extremely slow so I had like 10 different windows and with 2 different browsers open trying to buy tickets. Finally Toine (he made it here a couple minutes after I did) and I made it through to the purchase screen and when it was time to check out we used his credit card since I figured it'd have a higher chance of working since he's from the EU and my international card might get blocked or something. Unfortunately he realized that there was a pin that he needed from home to make it work so while I waited at the screen he ran home to get the pin and then call me so I could finalize the transaction. I went on my balcony  to see where he was and it took him like 5 minutes to leave my building which was really weird. To make a long story short, he was able to get the pin and after like 25 mins of waiting and continuing to try to get tickets we were able to get 2 tickets for 90Euros each and it was a HUGE relief and we were both elated. I later found out that Toine had gotten stuck in the elevator here while trying to leave because he opened the door before it had reached the bottom because he was in such a hurry to get home. My elevator here is like an antique and there are 2 sets of doors and if you open the inner doors too early then the outer doors will still be locked. The doorman, Domenico, later told me that a guy got stuck in the elevator and he had to help him get out but I pretended to not know what he was talking about.

The rest of the week went by in a blur as I anticipated the arrival of the game day. The day before the game I helped a couple of friends from France film a video for their home university in the Piazza Duomo and then afterward I went to the soccer store behind the Duomo and bought an authentic Javier Zanetti Inter jersey. They had a promotion so getting a name and number was free so I paid an extra 10Euros to get the Champions League patch on the sleeve. In reality I got ripped off but the name and number would have normally cost 10Euros anyway and I always fall victim to silly promotions like that. I also ended up buying a couple of t shirts (not soccer related) and got a whopper for lunch so I had a fantastic day. The next morning I woke up with an extra spring in my step from the excitement of the game later that day. I proudly sported my Inter jersey to classes that day and could barely concentrate on anything related to school. I met up with Toine, 2 of his friends from Holland who also came for the game, and Oyvind and a crew of Scandanavians to go to the game at around 6pm. When we got to the metro station near the stadium all I could see were either Inter or Barcelona fans. The police made the Barcelona supporters exit through a different exit because they had to take separate buses to the stadium. From the metro station they had a bunch of buses going to the stadium and it was easily the most packed bus I have been on (except for maybe a bus in Torino that was crazy full but I am not really sure why that was the case). The bus started to shake because everyone started cheering and screaming like crazy out of the left side of the bus and thats when I realized that the bus with the inter players was driving past us with their police escort. The side windows were tinted so we couldn't see anything but a friend said he could see Murinho (their famous coach) sitting in the front seat.

The outside of the stadium was like a carnival and even though there was still over an hour until kickoff, we could already hear the chants from the inside of the stadium. Once we got our tickets Toine and I jogged to the gates so we could get to our seats and relish the experience. The atmosphere inside the stadium was absolutely electric. The goalies for either team were the first players to go out on the field and the cheers for the inter players made the place shake. When Barcelona's players came out all you could hear were whistles (In European soccer, whisteling is basically the equivalent of booing- you'll see what I mean in the video).

Before the game they played the Champions League theme song over the loud speakers and that is when it really sank in that I was actually at the game. I really have no words to describe the game itself but it was actually just like what I was expecting except louder and more emotion filled. I had an incredible time and the fact that Inter upset Barcelona by winning (3-1) made it even more incredible. After each goal the random Italian's next to us would hug us and I barely had a voice by the time the game ended. I really don't think that you can compare ANY sports event to the game I had the privilege of watching. Not the Super Bowl, World Series Game 7, the Kentucky Derby, nothing. This sport flows through the veins of the fans and it is like their religion. The place was so charged with energy that after the game I felt exhausted physically and emotionally but it was incredible.

After the game nearly everyone stayed and sang songs and celebrated in the stadium for like 20 minutes. When the official Inter song "Pazza Inter" was played everyone went crazy and I think I was the only person in the entire stadium which was sold out (81,300 people!!!!) that did not know the words.

After the game I bought Toine and I some Cannolis to celebrate while we waited for his friends. We then headed to a bar/ lounge called Circle and celebrated the wonderful day.

I may never attend such an incredible game in the rest of my life! It was absolutely perfect and might turn out to be the highlight of my time here in Italy!

Forza Inter!

Camilo

P.S. Here are the game highlights in case you missed the game!!!

Sicily Roadtrip!! (4/14-4/18) [and updates]

on Tuesday, April 27, 2010

Before I start my post I want to say how lucky I feel to have such a wonderful family. The recent deaths of my mom's uncle, my grandpa, and Owen Thomas, a fellow junior from Wharton, serve as reminders of how fragile life is and how important it is to make the most of everyday. I think that it is really easy to lose sight of what is actually important and meaningful and to let the days go by without consciously thinking about the decisions you make; however, these recent events motivate me to constantly try to be the best person I can be and to constantly treat others with respect. Here is a great picture of my mom, brothers, and me with Dave after midnight mass for Christmas:

While I am writing this blog so that I can come back and read it some day, I know that my mom and brothers read it regularly to see the pictures of me as I travel. I can't wait to see you guys- You mean the world to me and I am very proud of you! Francisco will be here in 3 weeks and I couldn't be more thrilled to be able to share part of this experience with him. Some other good news are that he learned this week that he was accepted to study abroad in Ecuador next semester so I am excited for him to have such a unique experience.

Overall, I am having a good week. I have a cold though, so I have stayed in for the past 4 nights studying for my JPM test. Hopefully I start getting better soon! I am not that sick but I have a cough and am still congested. It probably doesn't help that I had McDonald's for dinner yesterday (with Daniel Kim) and today (with Marine). I literally eat more fast food here in Italy than I did back at Penn which is sad. I should really stop doing that, for the sake of saving money and taking advantage of all the great food! Yesterday after dinner Daniel gave me the music off of his computer and I have been listening to the songs all day. He downloaded the Billboard top 100 for April so I have all the current most popular songs. I am also looking forward to the 2nd leg of the Inter-Barca Champions League Semifinal. It would be incredible if Inter won the Champions League while I was here in Milan. Although the final will be in Madrid, Francisco will be here with me in Milan so we could go to a bar and watch it with all the crazy people! This week is also shaping up to be really busy for me because I have a couple of big group project coming up that I need to work on.

Alright amigos, its time to recount my time spent in Sicily, or Sicilia (Seecheelia) as we Italians like to say. After I got back to Milan from Spain I had to study for my midterm in Alternative Investments but during those 5 'study days' I did everything but! The first day I got back I went to the park with Oscar, Johan, and a few other friends to soak in the sun and kick around a soccer ball. We also brought hot dogs, bread, and chips with us to make lunch since Jorgen brought a disposable grill. We didn't actually end up grilling at the park because not everyone was that hungry, but it was still nice to be outside on such a beautiful day (easily the most beautiful in Milan up to that point for me). The next day was the Milano Marathon and the course went right past my apartment so I went on my balcony and watched people run by for a while! The day before my midterm I really tried to study though and I think the exam went well so I was happy about that.

The trip to Sicily started with a tram and metro ride with Johan to Stazione Centrale (you guessed it, Central Station) to meet up with Johan van Eck and the rest of the gang. Like my roadtrip through Tuscany, the group of people I went on this trip with were very diverse! There were 4 guys and 1 girl from Holland (Johan, Joris, Toine, Jaap and Karolina), 1 from Sweden (Johan), 1 from Iceland (Tomas), 1 from Canada (Oren), and 1 Colombian American (yours truly). Keli (another guy from Iceland) was also supposed to join us on the trip but had emergency surgery to get his appendix out a couple days before. Once we were all there (except for Jaap who met us later at the airport) we took the shuttle to the airport in Bergamo called Orio al Serio. The reason we flew out of Bergamo, is because it is the only airport in the region that RyanAir, the super low-cost carrier, flies out of. The round trip airfare only cost like 50Euros per person so it was a good deal. Unfortunately, the bus ride was terrible. We got stuck in traffic so it took an hour and a half to get to the airport and it was really hot on the bus. I remember I kept telling myself that suffering on that bus was not worth the cost savings of the cheap flight. Needless to say, I will try to keep flying EasyJet for my next trips. Once we got to the airport everything was going well until we got all the way to the front of the security line and they made Oren and I go to the check in counter to get stamps on our boarding passes since we aren't from the EU. Fortunately, we decided to just skip the line and go under the ropes to the front of the line after arriving back to security and no one seemed to care. After we got past security and caught up to everyone, we met up with Marine, Pascal, Rachel, and Sabrina, (all friends from school) who were on our same flight. It was a huge coincidence though because we originally planned the trips separately. We were renting cars upon arriving in Palermo though and they were staying mostly in the city so we didn't see them that much besides at the airport. I sat next to Tomas on the flight and no one sat in the seat between us so it was nice to have the open space there. We talked for most of the flight which I really enjoyed and before we knew it the flight was over! As soon as we stepped off the plane the humidity was very noticeable and you could tell that we were really close to the sea.

After we got everything settled at the airport we headed out to find the cars that we rented for the trip. One of the first things I noticed at the airport was the huge number of police officers and security guards. I know that Sicily is known for the Mafia activity so maybe that's why? The cars that we got were a Lancia (an Italian company) and a Volkswagen Rabbit. Johan, Joris, Johan V, and I took the Lancia and this proved to be a great decision because the leg room in the back seats was truly amazing. The cars and the groups of people in them never changed throughout the trip so we got to enjoy the added space for the duration of the trip (you'll see later why this became so important). Johan and Johan V were the drivers in our car and Oren and Jaap drove in the other car, so we had a good balance of 2 drivers per car. Another thing that was nice was that the GPS that we rented actually worked decently compared to the horrendous one that kept getting us lost in Tuscany. We headed straight to our B&B (Bed & Breakfast) so drop our things off before heading out for a bite to eat. However, making it to the B&B proved to be harder than we first imagined because some of the streets that we drove down were EXTREMELY narrow and we got stuck a couple times. At one point we were holding an Italian man up and he got out of his car to shout "vai vai vai!!" (go go go!!) at us while we were trying to squeeze between two buildings. If not for having folded the side view mirrors in, we would not have fit! After struggling to find the place we finally made it and it was quite a relief. Before I keep going I want to make sure that I mention that the radio stations in Sicily are hit or miss, but when you find a good one they are AMAZING! I didn't think the day would come when I would say that about a radio station but they literally played great songs like non-stop when they were working. After dropping everything off in our rooms (I shared a room with Johan) we all went outside to wait for Karoline to get ready. This proved to be a common occurrence during the trip since the 7 of us guys always got ready really quickly. After walking around and not finding a place to eat we found a nice place to have a panino and beer really close to the hotel near the beautiful marina which we drove past on the way to the hotel. After dinner Johan, Jaap, and I headed in because we were really tired but everyone else wanted to stay out and try to find a club or bar to go to. I honestly am not sure what they ended up doing, but I sure am glad I was able to get some rest that night because I was exhausted.

The next morning I was the first person up and at breakfast so I had to wake everyone else up so they wouldn't miss the free breakfast. Everyone else still had a ways to go before being ready to head out for the day so Johan and I decided to go out and explore the surrounding area while we waited. We headed to the marina next to where we ate the night before and right away we could tell that Palermo had a much different feel to it than the other Italian cities we had been to. In a strange way it seemed less developed and the traffic was completely erratic. It made the driving in Milan and Colombia look tame. There would be 6 cars next to each other on 2 lane roads and this was just one example of things being less organized. Next to the marina is really smelled like fish because there were several vendors on the side of the street selling fresh fish. After walking around the marina we head in a circle to get back to the hotel and walked next to a really really nice park which had the craziest tree I have ever seen. It was huge but the crazy part was that from the branches there would be other trunks which probably started off as vine that grew downward to the ground hundreds of years ago. It is hard to explain but I will post a picture so you can see what I am talking about. In the picture it looks like a bunch of different trees but they are all the same tree and all the small 'trunks' join the main one up higher. After this, we meet up with everyone else and then bought water at a grocery store before basically retracing the same steps that Johan and I had just walked while waiting for them. During this time 2 unfortunate things happened: 1. I stepped on dog poop and 2. Johan lost his sweater. However, 2 miracles also occurred: 1. It was a miracle that it took 3 months for me to stop on dog poop, because it is literally all over the place on the sidewalks here in Italy and 2. Johan found his sweater on the ground near the park. After we got back to the park, we all collectively decided to leave the city and drive to a beach to enjoy the weather. We figured that we could spend the last day in Palermo to see the city before our return flight.

The drive to the beach was very nice but none of us were prepared for how beautiful the beach was!

I can't remember the last time I had seen water that looked so blue/green and it was just beautiful. It was the closest I had been to paradise in a REALLY long time. We parked the cars and walked on the boardwalk toward the water but it got cloudy while we were walking and the water was still quite cold so we didn't get to swim in the sea like I was hoping. After a few hours at the beach (unfortunately I don't remember what it was called) we headed to Catania which is the 2nd largest city in Sicily. Palermo is located in the NW part of the island while Catania is on the West coast so it was a hearty, but beautiful drive along the coast. We stopped along the way for a coffee (in my case a Gatorade) and it was nice to not have any worries since I had already taken my only midterm. Now that the exam was not looming over my head, the only thing I needed to worry about for the time being was relaxing and enjoying the trip. When we finally got to Catania we had trouble getting to the B&B because the GPS kept trying to lead us down extremely narrow streets that we would have never been able to drive through. We finally made it though and the lady that ran the B&B was extremely nice and also very beautiful. She also had a small child (I am guessing around 12-18 months old) named Ricardo who might have been the cutest baby I have ever seen. Okay maybe the 2nd cutest after Francisco, I remember he was quite the looker back in the day. The best part of the place was the fact that our room had a huge balcony facing a very nice square in the center of the city. As we stood out there and looked down at all the people it was like being on the Pope's balcony at the Vatican.

Once we were all settled in we asked the lady from the B&B if she knew of any nice places where we could have dinner and she recommended a place so I made a reservation for us. Before dinner we headed to the grocery store to buy drinks for later in the evening and then headed back to the hotel. On TV they were showing the top 50 soccer goals of the year so we watched that until it was time to go to the restaurant. We ended up taking a long-cut to get to the place because on the way home it took a fraction of the time to get back but we are glad we went because we were not expecting the dinner to turn into such a memorable experience. The restaurant was called Tratoria Casalinga and its specialty was seafood. Right away we were greeted by an extremely energetic older man who called himself Nino (short for Antonino).  It turned out that he owned the restaurant and his sons were the waiters. None of us knew what to order for the primo piatto (first plate is usually a pasta) so Nino just said he would give us his specialty. We all hesitantly agreed but he was so confident in the way he said it that we all trusted him. WOW!!!!!!!!! My taste buds have still not recovered from Nino's specialty; Everything I eat still tastes bland in comparison. The plate came with 2 different kinds of pastas and sauces but the pasta with the red sauce was easily the best I have ever tried. I had previously said that the pasta in Siena was the best but this was on a completely different level. I have no words to explain the flavors. It was like adding a different dimension to eating, like seeing a 3D film for the first time or seeing TV in color for the first time. As the meal progressed Nino began to talk to us more and he really took a liking to Johan V. He kept teasing him and asking him where he was from and from then on, the rest of the dinner was more of a show than a meal. Nino and Johan V. kept going back and forth jokingly giving each other a hard time. At one point they were using a pepper grinder/shaker and a coat rack as props for their jokes. Nino also opened up 2 bottles of wine and drank them with us. He would pour us a glass and then toast and have us drink them quickly and then do it over again. For being so old, he sure was full of life! I made several videos of him so I wouldn't forget his way of being.

Halfway during dinner I received an unknown number from the US so I stepped out to answer in case it was my family or JPMorgan  and I was surprised when it was Joanna from the Wharton Council. She called me during the weekly WC meeting because they were about to vote for co-chairs for next year and wanted me to talk about myself so the new members could learn a bit about me. I wasn't expecting to be put on a conference call in the middle of dinner in Sicily but it was really nice to hear everyone. The next morning I found out that I was voted co-chair and it is truly an honor to lead such a fine group of individuals. I want to work really hard next semester so that I can make those that came before me proud! After 4 hours at the restaurant and 4 bottles of wine we decided to head out and see other parts of the city. It was a Thursday night so we figured there would be a lot of young people out looking for something to do. We found a bar with tables outside so we sat and talked for a while. Afterward we headed into an Irish pub and were surprised when it turned out to be a gay bar (the lady who recommended it is probably still laughing) so we called it a night since nothing else was open (of course we stopped for a kebab on the way home though).

Catania's central square and duomo are a World Heritage Site so we got up early to go out and see the parts of the city we still had not seen. On the way there we walked through a nice outdoor market where you could find anything from watches to scarves to CDs and cooking pans. Once we got to the piazza at the Duomo it was really beautiful. Johan, Tomas, and I arrived first so after taking a look around we headed to the fish market which is renowned world wide.

Besides all of the really big fish that we saw, we also ran into this guy!!! :

It was actually really nice to see Nino again to kind of get a last goodbye since the night before we left kind of quickly. He was extremely nice and everyone at the market knew him! He said he was there to buy fish for his restaurant so it was apparent that buying fresh food was really important to him. No wonder his pasta was so good. After we left the fish market we met up with the rest of the gang and Oren & I went to a pastry shop near the Duomo for a famous Sicilian treat: the Cannolo, or Cannoli as Americans call them. These special pastries are famous and I could definitely tell the difference between that one and the other ones I have tried before. It had pistachio shavings on top which made it even better. For those of you who aren't familiar with this tasty creation, it is a "pastry horn filled with cream cheese, candied fruit and chocolate". Believe me, they are delicious but they are so sweet that you can't eat more than one.

Leaving Catania was hard because it was so beautiful but we were all very eager to travel to the next location on our itinerary: Mt. Etna, the largest active volcano in Europe. The drive to Etna was nice because it was very hilly and it almost reminded me of being in Colombia. When we got to the point where you can take a gondola up we were appalled when it cost over 50+Euros to go up. Instead of paying an arm and leg to go up we decided it would be a better value to climb a nearby hill on foot and still get some spectacular views. The trek up this mini mountain was much more difficult than I was expecting because the ground was so unstable due to the loose lava stones. My boat shoes & no socks were also not the appropriate shoes to wear for such a hike but I survived nonetheless and even got my family lava stones as souvenirs (shhhhh don't tell them though because I haven't told them yet).

The final night of our trip was approaching so we drove to Cefalu, the last city on our schedule. The drive was also nice but the highlight was when a Lamborghini flew past us on the highway. After seeing that I was tempted to move the Lambo above the Ferrari on my "to-get" list. Cefalu was a very special stop because it is truly an oasis.
We were staying at a hotel which was right across the street from the ocean so we had amazing views. As was routine, we dropped all of our things off at the hotel and then went into the heart of the town for dinner. We decided on a seafood restaurant and I started my meal with a pasta with sardines. It was my first time eating sardines but it was the restaurants specialty so I tried it and it was fabulous. My 2nd dish was another fish and that was really good as well. Overall, I absolutely loved the cuisine in Sicily.
After dinner we went to the center of the city to the main church and hung out on the steps since everything else was seemingly closed. I talked to a couple of people who were from the city and they said that everything was closed on Fridays which didn't make any sense at all. We ended up following a group of people to a bar/lounge but Jaap, Oren, Johan, Tomas, and I left early and headed home because it wasn't that fun. When I got back to the hotel I checked my email before bed and was shocked to see an email from JPM asking me to confirm that I was returning to TMT this summer. I emailed them back to tell them that I never worked in TMT and was worried that I wouldn't get a fair shot at the group placement process. Since then I have had the chance to talk to different groups and regardless of where I end up this summer, I know I will be in a great group.

The next day we began to hear about more and more airport closing due to the Volcano eruption in Iceland which resulted in a huge ash cloud over much of Europe. Needless to say that morning was pretty crazy once we heard our flight was cancelled because we weren't sure when the airport would be re-opening. It turned out that flights were cancelled for like 5 days in Italy and even longer in other places like England so that was pretty crazy. We decided to drive the rental cars all the way back to Milan and it was a huge relief for me,  because I was worried about missing the HUGE Champions League Match that I had been looking forward to going to so much. After buying a chicken and splitting it with Johan for lunch and sitting out with the whole group in the sun we decided to head out. It was going to be a really long drive to Milan and we wanted to drive non-stop so we wouldn't have to pay for an extra days car rental. The drive home took 19 hours in total and we drove onto a ferry to get back to the mainland. The drive to get to the ferry however was really memorable because it was composed almost exclusively of bridges and tunnels. I have never been in or seen so many tunnels in my life. It was incredible. Something else that was really crazy was that the ferry had train tracks on the bottom floor and  a train drove into it!! I made a video because I couldn't believe it.

To ensure that the drivers wouldn't be too tired to stay awake we had a system where the driver and co-pilot pairs would switch every 4 hours so the others could sleep in the back seat. This is why the huge amount of leg room in the car turned out to be so great! Whenever Johan and I would drive we constantly talked and I had a wonderful time. I am actually really glad our flight was cancelled because that was one of the most fun drives I have ever been on. Unfortunately we never got to see more of Palermo but I did get to ride through practically all of Italy! When we finally got back to Milan the next morning it was so nice to be back in my room and have my own bed. The drive was really exhausting but I had an amazing trip.

Many thanks to Johan V. for organizing such a nice trip. All of the places we stayed at and visited were very nice and I am really glad I was able to go on the trip.

It is getting late and I have class in the morning so I should get going to bed!

Buona notte!
